About Substack
Newsletter and blog platform with free and paid subscriptions, popular with independent travel writers.
Substack is a publishing platform that sends each post as an email newsletter and keeps it on the web as well. Writers can offer free subscriptions and paid ones, and Substack takes a share of paid subscription revenue rather than charging a monthly fee.
Many independent travel writers use it to build a direct audience that doesn't depend on social feeds: trip dispatches, monthly destination notes or a paid deep-dive series. It also supports podcasts and video posts, and readers can follow writers through the Substack app. Comments and notes give readers a place to reply, which suits trip reports that invite questions.
Before you commit, compare how easily you can export your subscriber list and posts, and how a custom domain works, so you can move later if your needs change.
